The Melges IC37 Class congratulates Ian Atkins and his crew aboard ICY for being named the 2019 Hamble Big Boat Champion and first place in the IRC 1 Class. Hosted by the Hamble River Sailing Club, the Hamble Winter Series takes place over four weeks in October.

In June 2019, twenty brand-new Melges IC37s, 131 amateur sailors, a team of coaches from North Sails, the team from Melges Performance Sailboats, and the team from New York Yacht Club who were responsible for getting the boats in the water and ready to sail, gathered at Sail Newport in Newport, RI for an inaugural “training weekend.”
Teamwork, preparation, and skill were all put to the test in Newport’s finest conditions this weekend which delivered the closest, most hard-fought racing Class members have seen yet.
Melges IC37 sailors completed three races in glamorous conditions on Race Day 2, bringing us past the half way point in this hotly contested championship. The Members Only syndicate team still leads the competition into the final day, but it was Double Jointed, co-helmed by Ray Wulff and Andy Fisher, and Qubit, helmed by Chris Lewis that shined this afternoon.
Newport serves up the perfect challenge for Melges IC37 sailors on a memorable first day of racing at this inaugural event. The “Members Only” syndicate team top the overall standings after issuing a “one-two punch” on the water.
Members descend on the waters of Newport, R.I. to crown their first-ever National Champion. Follow the action direct from the race course and social events to see who will reign supreme.
Cowes Week 2019 turned out to be one of most successful in the history of the event with 100s of teams enjoying super-fast, exciting racing all week. The newest boat in IRC Class 1, Russell Peters’ IC37 Kanreki, stormed to victory, counting four first places and one third.
